We read II Peter this week along with the book of Jude. In his second letter, Peter warns the believers about false teachers and encourages them to stand firm in the faith. Later Jude writes his letter because the false teachers Peter predicted in his letter had already infiltrated the church. Jude tells his readers to persevere and contend for the truth of God’s Word.
How should Christians react to false teachers? First, we must be alert and pray that God reveals false teaching to us. Second, we must check all teachings against the truth of the Bible because God’s Word is the source of all truth and power. Third, we must speak out and correct the false teachings. Can you discern truth from heresy (denying revealed biblical truth)? Be aware that if you accept false teachings, you then will feed it to others around you. Surround yourself only with the truth of God.
Peter also addresses scoffers who believe God would not keep His promise to return and establish His eternal kingdom. Peter reminds his readers that God is outside of human time limits (II Peter 3:8). His apparent delay in returning to earth is demonstrating His patience as He allows more people to repent and turn to Him.
As we wait for Christ’s return, we should live holy, godly lives. God has given us everything we need for a successful life, in His Word and in His power through the Holy Spirit. Am I growing in Christ-like qualities (II Peter 2:5-7)? Am I putting the appropriate effort into these qualities? And how does the knowledge of Christ’s return affect me? Is it on my mind? Do I talk about it? Am I making right choices in light of His imminent return?
Finally, Jude warns the believers that false teachers are trying to divide the church. Not only should we speak out against false teaching, we also should help others who are doubting or who are being swayed by false teachers. How do I respond when the truth around me is compromised?
