Last week was Mommaw Clark’s birthday. To celebrate, she requested a visit to Kelsay Farms. We were happy to oblige!
We’d never been to this farm before but had heard good things about it. After our visit, we highly recommend going and may make this an annual trip each fall. The entrance fee is a little steep at $8 per person (including tiny Avery!), but the whole adventure ended up being worth the price. Once we were through the gate, the only things we paid for were pumpkins and some snacks. We certainly could have gone without these extras, but how do you go to a dairy farm and not enjoy a chocolate milkshake?
First up, Daddy and Avery climbed the haystack mountain. Chris saw this slide and thought it would be a fun thing to do with Avery. When they got to the bottom, they hadn’t reached the end of the slide. They had to climb back up the other side of the tube to get out. Actually, Daddy did the climbing while also pushing Avery ahead of him.
They both made it out safely!
Next we visited the corn swimming pool. This pool was maybe a foot deep with corn kernels. It was a fun place to play! Avery wasn’t too sure about it at first, but she eventually enjoyed herself. (Days later, we were still finding kernels of corn around the house!)
As you will see below, there were several of these fun cut-outs around the farm, giving great photo ops. Avery loved all of them!
Mommy even joined in on the fun.
The cows are the real reason we visited the farm! This is a six-generation, working dairy farm. The family milks 500 cows three times a day, 365 days a year. They transport the “raw” milk to Dean Foods in Louisville, where it is pasteurized and processed into any number of dairy products.
We got to step into the milking parlor to watch the machines milk 32 cows at once. It was pretty amazing to see technology at work. I can’t imagine having to do that kind of work by hand every day!
Avery wanted to get closer to the cows. Instead, she practiced her cow calls from a distance.
Hello, farmer Avery!
One of the activities at the farm is the Moo Choo Train. There was just enough room in the car for two adults and two small children. Avery made a little friend on this short train ride.
Drive that tractor, Avery!
I know Avery is little, but she was really dwarfed by this huge tractor tire!
At the end of the day, Mommaw and Poppaw bought Avery her own perfectly sized pumpkin.
Looks like everyone had a lot of fun. I love the pictures of Avery being the farmer, driving the tractor, and standing in the tractor tire. Uncle Jim will be proud when he sees them.
