We’ve had a rough start to 2011, health-wise. Chris started it all with bronchitis, ear infections and a sinus virus in early January. Then Avery got sick. And last week it was my turn.

It took two rounds of antibiotics for Chris to get better. And two months later, he’s still fighting a slight cough. Add in an unexpected minor diagnostic procedure last week, and Chris is tired of being in doctors’ offices already this year. (I’ll let Chris decide if he’ll share his story and video blog with the world!)

So I wasn’t surprised when Avery picked up a cough and a runny nose a few weeks ago. When the cough got worse and didn’t go away, I took her to the doctor for her first sick-baby visit. And I was glad I did. She had a “wet” cough and was starting to get fluid in her ears. So the doctor prescribed a 10-day round of amoxicillin.

Things were going well — Avery was getting better, then I got hit. I was completely out of commission last Friday. Then Chris insisted that I see a doctor on Saturday for my cough. I also was diagnosed with bronchitis. Thanks, Honey! :o) Another trip to the pharmacy for a cough medicine prescription, and a few days later I was all better.

But also on Saturday, Avery had a splotchy rash over her whole body. The nurse at her doctor’s office told us to stop the amoxicillin (in case it was an allergic reaction) and start Benadryl. When the rash didn’t improve by Monday, we took Avery to the doctor again … on her birthday! What a way to celebrate your birthday! All of the nurses fawned over her and lavished her with birthday stickers. She loved the stickers but didn’t really understand what the fuss was about!

After looking at the rash, the nurse told us that it wasn’t an allergic reaction. Thank goodness! It could have been a virus that affected Avery as a rash. Or it could have been something else. We may never know! Rashes can be difficult to diagnose since they affect everyone differently. We were told to keep up the Benadryl and watch for anything to worsen. Wouldn’t you know it that the next morning she woke up with the rash completely gone! I guess whatever it was worked its way out of her system.

So between everyone being sick and the big girl’s birthday on Monday, we haven’t had a chance to update the blog lately. The official birthday party is this Saturday, so after that we’ll have lots of pictures, videos and stories to share!
